For the first time, the Lion King has arrived in Chicago for a limited time. Having been a part of opening night, I can tell you that from beginning to end, the show will keep you entertained and is well worth the price.
Known for its spectacular costumes and choreography, the show is a re-telling of Disney’s classic animated movie. The opening number is so involving and really pulls everyone into the show. The cast is incredibly talented from the young actors to the main leads. I can’t say enough about the creativity used to create an African jungle setting and the transition of landscape and use of puppetry really enhance the show.
Appropriate for both adults and children, the show runs just over 2 hours with one intermission and is playing at the Cadillac Theater over in the loop, about a ten minute cab ride from the hotel.
With its popularity, tickets may be hard to come by, so stop by the concierge desk and let us find you the best seats available as well as before or after show dinner plans.

Shedd Aquarium
One of the most beautifully located museums in Chicago is also one of the most popular as well. The Shedd Aquarium, located on museum campus, is one of my favorite places to visit in Chicago because of the incredible diversity of exhibits and displays as well as the view of the city and lake. Having just celebrated its 80th birthday, the Aquarium is one of the largest and oldest in the nation.
The Shedd houses all sorts of marine wildlife and is known as one of the only aquariums to train and house the beautiful beluga whales. The whales as well as other sea mammals including dolphins and penguins have become part of one of the more popular shows at the Shedd called “Fantasea”. Ask Sheryl, our concierge, about her experience swimming with the belugas!
There are many other shows and exhibits that are all included in your VIP ticket which can be purchased through the concierge desk. The VIP ticket includes front-of-line privileges and most of the exhibits. There is a 4-D movie that can be added for an addition $4.95 at the aquarium (I won’t tell you why it is 4-D; just say that it is a fun way to enjoy sea life).
My favorite exhibit has to be the sea horse and sea dragon aquariums. They have a beautiful display of some of my favorite sea animals. The Shedd also has one of the most photogenic views of the city in my opinion, right out the front doors.
Enjoy!

Murder at the Knickerbocker!!!
Dinner theater arrives at the Millennium Knickerbocker this fall in the form of a Murder Mystery. “The Dinner Detective” will start performances this October on the top floor of our historic hotel. Come be a part of the show and enjoy an evening of fun and great food.
Beginning Oct. 16th, this event will keep dinner guests wondering what the next move will be in what has been rated the top murder mystery in southern California for the past three years. In between the four course meal of your choice, you will be a part of guessing whodunit with cast members intermingled amongst dinner guests. Be as active in the game as you wish, but prizes are given to participants who help solve the mystery.
Your ticket (only $59.95 with savings to larger groups) includes Hors d’oeuvres, salad, entrĂ©e, dessert and a fun-filled night of laughs and surprises. Cocktails and other drinks may be purchased separately. The show is perfect for anniversaries, birthdays or other special occasions and is the only show of its type in the downtown Chicago area.
As someone who has enjoyed Murder Mystery in Vegas, Salt Lake and Los Angeles, I am looking forward to the mayhem created by the characters both attending and performing weekly in Chicago’s newest dinner theater. So come on and do your best to help solve “The Dinner Detective”.
Enjoy!

Free days at the Museums
Most of the museums in and around Chicago offer free admission on certain days. For anyone on a budget, these days are a great and inexpensive way to visit the attractions throughout Chicago. A few of the museums offer weekly free days, while others are gratis a few days here and there. A good way to know how to schedule your plans around the free days is to visit ExploreChicago.org which lists all of the museums and their free days.
Throughout the 2010 year, the Art Institute of Chicago is free every Thursday night from 5pm – 8pm. and the Museum of Contemporary art is free all day Tuesdays. The Chicago History Museum offers free admission on Mondays and the Children’s Museum at Navy Pier is free on Thursdays from 5pm – 8pm.
Some of the other museums like the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry have various free days throughout the year. They are all listed on the website previously mentioned. We also list all of the free days on our “Concierge Weekly” available at the concierge desk or on the side of this blog.
There are several museums throughout the city which are always free including the beautiful Cultural Center located south on Michigan Avenue and the eclectic Museum of Contemporary Photography also south on Michigan Ave. Of course, the Lincoln Park Zoo is always free and only a 10 minute bus ride away.
Enjoy!
