We here in Chicago take Phil’s predictions quite seriously as we love our winters but there is nothing better than springtime in the city.

Luckily, there are many events happening that will make the time pass quickly.

The 2013 Chicago Auto Show runs from Saturday, February 9 – Monday, February18 at McCormick Place (2301 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, Illinois, 60616). This is the largest auto show in North America and one of the most popular attractions of the year. Hours of operation are the same from February 9-17: 10 a.m. - 10 p.m., however on the last day (Feb 18) the will close a little bit earlier: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased directly at McCormick Place or online: https://tickets.drivechicago.com and prices are as follows: $12 for adults, $6 for seniors aged 62 and older, $6 for children 7-12, free admission for children 6 and younger when they accompany a paying adult (family members only).

From February 13-15, there is a way to receive a discount on the ticket price by being charitable; bring three cans of food to the Chicago Auto Show to receive a coupon for $6 admission. All food will be donated to A Safe Haven which helps the homeless in Chicago get back on their feet. Thank you in advance for helping out the less fortunate!!

There are special events for visitors to enjoy each day/night so make sure to check out the schedule: http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/news/events__appearances.aspx.

On Sunday, February 17th there will be college hockey games (2 to be exact) being played at historic Soldier Field for the first time. Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish will be facing off against the Miami Redhawks at Noon and then the Minnesota Golden Gophers take the ice against the Wisconsin Badgers at 3:30PM. Tickets are valid for both games and may be purchased at Ticketmaster.com, by calling 1-800-745-3000 or at Ticketmaster outlets.

If you want to get out of the cold and embrace some culture, head over to the Art Institute of Chicago (111 South Michigan Ave., Chicago, Il 60603). A new exhibit - Picasso and Chicago is opening on Wednesday, February 20 and runs through Sunday, May 12. This is a very big deal for the AI as the exhibit is going to showcase a large collection of his paintings, sculpture, prints and drawings, something they have not done in over 30 years! These priceless pieces are part of the museums collection but the AI has also been able to acquire pieces from other collections throughout Chicago. This is an event not to be missed!

In the month of November we celebrate Veterans Day and we at the Millennium Knickerbocker THANK all past, present, and future men and women serving in the military.

The holidays are quickly approaching but the official start in Chicago is on Saturday, November 17th. The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival & Parade starts at 5:30PM on Michigan Avenue. Mickey and Minnie Mouse “turn on” over a million lights up and down the Magnificent Mile and the highlight of the parade is that Santa comes into town for a special surprise appearance!

On Sunday, November 18th bring the family to Millennium Park for a day of outdoor ice skating. There is no charge to skate if everybody has their own equipment; otherwise skate rental is $10 per person. The rink is open every day through March 11, 2013.

Bring the family to Daley Plaza (located at Washington & Dearborn) on Tuesday, November 20th for the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony which is at 5PM. The kids will be able to visit Santa and tour his house from 11AM - 8PM every Friday, Saturday and Sunday starting November 23rd and running through December 16th. Jolly Old St. Nick takes some extra time out of his busy schedule December 17th - December 23rd to say hello to the good girls and boys and take last minute gift requests each day from 11AM - 8PM. He will even be in Chicago on Christmas Eve from 11AM - 4PM. The other exciting event that happens in Daley Plaza on the same night and runs through December 24th is the Christkindlmarket Festival. There are all types of gifts (ornaments, cuckoo clocks, jewelry, beer steins, etc) and multiple food options from all over Europe. Hot spiced wine for mom and dad is a welcome treat on a cold night, there is also hot chocolate for the kids. If you bring your appetites, there are potato pancakes, brats and various sausages, as well as a house filled with all types of European treats and candies.

On Thanksgiving Day join almost a half of a million people to celebrate the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The parade starts at 8AM on State Street and runs from Congress to Randolph. Do not forget to call NiX Restaurant at the Millennium Knickerbocker to make your Thanksgiving dinner reservations with chef Hagop Hagoplan (312-867-7575).

If you are motivated to help out the less fortunate, join more that 5,000 runners in Lincoln Park on Thanksgiving morning. The 2012 Life Time Turkey Day 5K will take place in Lincoln Park and benefits the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Start time is at 9AM. Please be sure to bring two cans of food on the day of the race (feel free to bring more, the extra donations will be happily accepted). Make sure to register in advance for the race: http://www.turkeyday-5k.com/page/show/552422-chicago.
Summertime in Chicago Brings Lollapalooza, Genghis Kahn and the 54th Annual Chicago Air and Water Show

Summer is here and that means live outdoor music!
The biggest summer music festival of the year happens in Grant Park (Columbus Dr. & Congress Pkwy) from August 3 – August 5 from 11AM-10PM. A one day pass is $95 but kids under the age of 10 are admitted free with a ticket paying adult.
There are over 100 bands and the music genre’s range from rock, hip hop, alternative and punk rock. This year’s biggest headliners are the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Black Keys, Black Sabbath (hello Ozzy Osbourne!) and Jack White from the White Stripes.
There are plenty of places to eat and drink as the entry policies are quite strict. There is no outside food or drinks allowed (except 2 factory-sealed water bottles, up to 1 liter each). You can bring in items like blankets and binoculars, for a list of the items that are and are not allowed at Lollapalooza go to - http://www.lollapalooza.com/faqs/festival-faqs/ for more information.
If you are looking for something a little bit more low key, the Field Museum is featuring the Genghis Kahn exhibit through September 3. The Field Museum is located at: 1400 S. Lake Shore Dr. and is open 9AM-5PM. Adult tickets are $22 for adults and $15 for kids ages 3-11. However, for a few dollars more visitors can purchase an “All-Access Pass” which would give access not only to Genghis Kahn but to Extreme Mammals, The Ernst & Young 3-D Theater, Underground Adventure and all of the museum’s permanent exhibitions (like Sue, the Tyrannosaurus Rex!!).
Cost for the All-Access pass is $29 for adults and $20 for kids 3-11.
An event that can be shared no matter where you are in the city is the 54th Annual Chicago Air & Water Show on August 18 & 19, although the “warm up” show is on Friday, August 17. This is the largest (more than 2 million people) Free air show of its kind in the United States and the best seats in the house are on our very own lakefront. People swarm the beaches from Ohio Street and as far north as Montrose making a day of it as the show runs from 9AM-3PM. The prime viewing areas are from Oak Street to North Avenue but the aircrafts fly for miles around the city.

Feel free to pack a picnic basket, but if you prefer to travel light, there are food vendors from Oak Street to Fullerton. Over the years the weather has cooperated, but has been hot, so bring your chairs, blankets and sunscreen and plan to spend the day being amazed by the sights on land and water.

The show kicks off with the National Anthem while the U.S. Army Parachute Team Golden Knights jump out of planes looking like little specs in the sky and then lightly land on North Avenue Beach. Following is a day filled of airborne acrobatics by both civilian (Aeroshell Aerobatic Team and The Firebirds) and military (USAF F-16 Fighting Falcon and T-38 Talon) groups. There are also water maneuvers that include the Chicago Fire Department Air and Sea Rescue Team.

The highlight of the show is the US Navy’s Blue Angels, who roar across the sky and perform breathtaking (and Dangerous) air maneuvers. They buzz many of the cities buildings and you will have an overabundance of fantastic photo opportunities throughout the day!

Whether you spend your time inside or outside, thank you for choosing to stay at the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel.

Summer is finally here! All of the city beaches are officially open and the heat has brought out the swimmers in full force. There is 26 miles of lakefront and each weekend it is swarmed by walkers, runners, bike riders and roller bladers…and those are just activities on land. There is also sailing, kayaking and paddle boating for those that prefer to play in Lake Michigan. Swimming is permitted and lifeguards are on duty at all beaches from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., unless otherwise posted.

The Fourth of July will be here in a flash, so make sure to head over to watch the fireworks at Navy Pier! They begin at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4 and will be accompanied by patriotic music. If you are not going to be in town over the Fourth, have no fear, there will also be fireworks on Saturday, June 30, and Saturday, July 7, at 10:15PM.

Taste of Chicago 2012

Known as one of the world’s largest food festivals (past totals have topped 3 million visitors), 2012’s Taste of Chicago will take place from July 11-15. Originally running 10 days, the fest has been trimmed to five so make sure to check out some of the tastiest restaurant offerings while in town. You can buy a whole portion of food or a “taste” portion, just enough to wet your whistle. Taste portions allow patrons to try numerous food vendors without spending a lot of money. Tickets for food and drinks can be purchased from booths set up around the festival, there are no admission fees.

Some Chicago favorites such as Eli’s Cheesecake, Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria and Original Rainbow Cone will be in attendance!

Can I just say how happy I am that the Beaches are open. The Beaches being open means my favorite beach bars are open too!

Lets start with the Oak Street Beach since it is the closest to our hotel. Not only very popular with the locals, the tourist Love it as well. It just so happens that Oak Street Beach is where the Beachtro is located. Beachtro is a large outdoor deck bar that serves Cocktails & Food. It makes you feel as if you were at a luxurious resort.

Now go North 1 mile and you will find North Ave. Beach and Castaways. The most popular of all the Beaches and Beach Bars. Ah, what can I say…. I Love it Here! This place has the Best people watching, the Best Bar Scene, the BEST View of the City. The food, the drinks, and the view make this place priceless. Well, you know that warmer weather is coming when Chicago Tour Companies start running their seasonal tours. There are several choices to suit each of your individual needs. Lets start with land….. See it All Tours does a great 2 hour City Tour. They run 10am & 1pm. They will pick you up here at the Knickerbocker Hotel entrance and bring you back as well. This tour will go through the city as well as the Gold Coast, Lincoln Park and a final stop at Wrigley for a photo opportunity. Also, the Double Decker Hop on Hop off, does the same thing. But, city only and you can ride it all day; see us at the Concierge Desk for a Discount and Booking. I Love Absolutely Segway Tours! You will have a guided tour on the Lakefront & Museum Campus. These guys do a great job and have the best prices. You can also try a walking tour. Chicago Detour offer Walking Tours of the Loop area. The Architectural Foundation offers walking Art Deco & Skyscrapers walking tours as well. Don’t forget Frank Llyod Wright Tours, too! Be sure to not miss out on the Wrigley Field tours while you are in town. Wrigley Field is the second oldest baseball field in the United States. Water Tours Galore…… I will start with my favorites first! Chicago Line does Architectural & Historical River Cruises, as does the Architectural Foundation. Both tours are 90 minutes and need to be booked in advance, as they do sell out. Then we have our beautiful Lake Michigan boat tours. Everything from dinner cruises to sightseeing. The most fun is the Sea Dog, it is a huge speed boat that cruises out on the lake at fast speeds. On the other side there is the Tall Ship Windy which is a huge Sail boat that does a pirate theme for 2 hours, I love this one and for the photo opportunities. Last but not least The Odyssey, Spirit, and Mystic Blue do the Lunch & Dinner cruises. These are great for Singles and Couples alike, from fun and loud to romantic for the love birds out there. Please call me and I will be happy to fill you in. I could go on and on about the tours offered in my fine city of Chicago. For more information and recommendations on other tours that may not be listed above, please contact us here at the Concierge Desk and we will be happy to assist you with more information and make a booking for you or stop by and see me Sheryl, Paul or Henry and we will be happy to help!Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel Concierge Cornerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07829437943647276002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6895540424125970062.post-40657232556086291502012-04-28T16:20:00.000-07:002012-04-28T16:23:36.311-07:00A look back into the 1930'sIn the early 1930’s, the Knickerbocker Hotel had resident guests as well as transient guests. Mary Belle Spaulding was among many of our resident guests. Ms. Spaulding arrived in Chicago with a family letter of introduction to launch a life insurance sales career. New Clientele was largely comprised of North Shore and Gold Coast families.
In the 1930’s, the Knickerbocker’s Continental room was a library that contained over 8000 volumes. This library was where Ms. Spaulding met with new client prospects. Her career prospered so much that she had a Steele safety deposit box chained to the floor of her bedroom closet, containing a vast jewelry collection.Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel Concierge Cornerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07829437943647276002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6895540424125970062.post-37190845596601431312012-04-19T11:45:00.001-07:002012-04-19T11:50:35.068-07:00Theater in the Summer<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 224px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_-Rs2qfXZ6NMGrax7M9LpHCVbJU4mHY_FspDhf0oxR78fu_BviufpVXwX4PzoyBh3lnHk7oby6u24s9T3Ctbz6ipG3hyphenhyphenh-XHIVAfkka252kKcIHMBmvh3PuPm4UwjwonFKdpBt8I34LSs/s320/img17828815.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5733185571471148770" />

Theatre in Chicago always presents a good laugh and a good cry! This April there is so many good happenings in our Theatre District.

Jersey Boys is back! They will reside at the Bank of America Theater through December. My personal favorite is the Million Dollar Quartet, now in its fourth year running; it is a toe tapper from beginning to end. Another fun one is Motherhood the Musical at the Royal George Theatre. It is a Comedy of the blessings and perils of being a mom.
For a more children friendly crowd, Pinkalicious, is a musical great for kids 3 and Up. The show is performing just a short walk from the hotel at the Broadway Playhouse.

Feeling a little bit dramatic? The Shakespeare Theatre located at Navy Pier is a must for any theatergoer. Stop by and check out the critically acclaimed show ‘Being Shakespeare’. The show is running through April 29th.

Gourmet Mexican feast? World-class circus acts? Tantalizing love story? Believe it or not, you can get all of this at the new show Cascabel starring world renowned chef, Rick Bayless. Cascabel is performing at the Lookingglass Theater just a few blocks away from the Knickerbocker Hotel.

Chicago has so many theaters – small, large, wonderful, historic, and the list goes on. Our Theater district has something to offer everyone. The Cubs face off against the Washington Nationals and comedian/lifelong Cubs fan Bill Murray will sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the 7th inning stretch.

A trip to Wrigley Field, better known as “The Friendly Confines” is a must see if you have not yet been to the park. Chicago has a fantastic transit system and it is a short subway “L” ride away from the hotel. The Red Line north to Addison will drop you at Wrigley’s back door in the bustling “Wrigleyville” neighborhood. There are multitudes of bars, restaurants and shops to visit in this hot area.

Just a little background on Wrigley - the first game played in 1914 and still stands as the original structure even with some new renovations. The biggest news for 2012 is that the Ricketts family purchased the Chicago Cubs from the Tribune Company and they hired Theo Epstein, the former general manager of the Boston Red Sox to become the Cubs new President of baseball operations. The fans in Chicago are hoping he will be able to break the Cubs Curse and bring Chicago a long overdue north side World Series!!

For more information about the Chicago Cubs - http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=chc

The other baseball team in Chicago is on Chicago’s South Side of town - the Chicago White Sox Opening Day is on Friday, April 14th at 1:10PM against the Detroit Tigers.
You can also get to the park – U.S. Cellular Field by riding the Red Line subway southbound to the Sox/35th Street stop. The park is only a block away from the park and is such an easy and convenient way to see a big league game.

Unlike at Wrigley Field, tailgating is allowed and encouraged in White Sox parking lots before every home game until game time. Parking lots open two hours prior to game time.

A wonderful way to commemorate your visit is to stop by any Guest Relations Booth to pick up a “First Game Certificate” – this for fans that have come to U.S. Cellular for their very first time.

Fans will not have to wait for the Fourth of July to see fireworks! Fireworks are exploded before every game, after every White Sox home run, and after White Sox victories.

Make the most of your trip to Chicago and check out one or both of our legendary ball parks. The new seasons are starting and as the fans always say - Next Year is Here!!Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel Concierge Cornerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07829437943647276002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6895540424125970062.post-50578958800333007482012-02-12T19:43:00.000-08:002012-02-12T19:47:07.738-08:00February is filled with Autos, Art and the Circus!Come one, come all, the edition of the Chicago Auto Show has commenced!

The Chicago Auto Show is the largest auto show in North America and has been held more times than any other auto expo on the continent.

Put on your walking shoes and plan on spending the day checking out the newest models available by a plethora of automakers. We are bracing ourselves for the wintry weather to kick in, although we would not mind it bypassing us altogether…

Thinking warm thoughts, the Chicago Boat, Sports & RV show takes place Thursday, January 12 – Monday, January 16 at McCormick Place (2301 S. Lake Shore Drive).
Cost is $10 for adults and free for kids 15 and younger.

Whether you enjoy fishing or sailing, or being a road warrior, spend the day checking out hundreds of boats and RV’s as well as all of the gear that goes along with your hobby.

If you have always wanted to try to scuba dive, this is the place to be. Learn about the equipment, some basic diving skills and then hop into the heated pool to embark on a new adventure. Make your way over to Paddlefest where you can try kayaking, canoeing and stand up paddleboards in the pool.

Feeling competitive? The Power Boat Docking Challenge has you steering your radio controlled boat while standing at the real helm of a full size boat. This is a race against time, as you drive your “boat” from the lake towards the marina and into a slip. Best times will win a prize!

There is also the Huck Finn Trout Pond for kids 12 years and younger. Random fish are tagged and if your child hooks one, they can win a prize.

The show is full of all types of activities so make sure to plan on spending the day at the show!

Once the snow starts to fly there are some family fun winter events happening in the city.
Come out for some fun at the 7th Annual Polar Adventure Days, which take place on both Saturday, January 21 and Saturday, February 18 from 12 - 4 p.m.

Activities will include ice sculptors, snowshoeing (free snowshoe rental available), discussions with participants of Iditarod dog sled races with Siberian Huskies on hand, storytelling, live music from the Old Town School of Folk Music and an area for arts and crafts.

Polar Adventure Days takes place at Northerly Island, 1400 S. Congress Parkway, Chicago. The show runs as a limited engagement (Dec. 9 – 27), so make sure to get your tickets now.

If you are looking for a more interactive experience you must take a trip to the world famous Museum of Science and Industry to see the 70th annual Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light. Over 50 trees are decorated symbolizing local customs and traditions from places like Austria, Japan and Wales. Volunteers from Chicago’s ethnic communities take the time each year to showcase how the rest of the world celebrates the holidays.

While you are at the Museum, there is a phenomenal new exhibit called There’s Fun to be Done! Dr. Seuss & The Art of Invention. The exhibit focuses on the life and works of Theodor Seuss Geisel, otherwise known as Dr. Seuss. Day or night there are breathtaking view from the 95th and 96th floors of the John Hancock Tower, the Signature Room and Lounge, or if you make your way to Navy Pier, check out the Chicago Skyline by taking a ride on the 150 foot-high Ferris wheel.

One of the biggest events of the holiday season takes place on November 19th – The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival. A family favorite, Mickey and Minnie lead the parade to light up Michigan Avenue while Santa makes a surprise appearance at the end to kick off the holiday celebration!

Now for those of you that are sports minded, you have come to the right city!
Chicagoans are fiercely loyal to their sports teams, especially when it comes to football and the Monsters of the Midway… aka... The Chicago Bears.
So far we have been very lucky with our fall weather; however the Bears could use some of that luck to improve their record from 3-3. The Bears will be back at home to rumble with the Detroit Lions on November 13th at noon. There is no bigger thrill than to watch punt and kickoff returner Devin Hester zigzag down the field for a touchdown.

You can also catch the Bears at Soldier Field on November 20th when they play the San Diego Chargers. We take pride in our winter games, especially against warm weather teams… and we do not have a dome, so bundle up.

If hockey is your sport of choice, you must get to the United Center on West Madison to see the 2010 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks. You need to experience the National Anthem being sung by Jim Cornelison at the United Center – his rendition is second to none.

Then to the main event to watch as Team Captain Jonathan Toews leads superstars Patrick Kane, Patrick Sharp and “the man who Lost 7 Teeth” Duncan Keith, to Victory. Their Schedule of home games for November are 11th (Flames), 13th (Oilers), and 29th (Coyotes).

Make the most of your stay in Chicago at the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel!Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel Concierge Cornerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07829437943647276002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6895540424125970062.post-28214069209617260792011-09-14T17:05:00.001-07:002011-09-14T17:05:54.013-07:00Food, Food and More Food! This latter part of summer and fall there seems to be more new and highly anticipated restaurants opening than usual, everything from small names to BIG names.

Let’s start first with and oldie but goody back in the day. The Pump Room, the hotel which it occupied was sold and remodeled which was badly needed. But, the name will remain the same for the Pump Room. With a new fancy chef from NYC named Jean Georges Vongerichten, they will relive the staples of the Roasted Lobster and Wiener Schnitzel along with some trendy fare as well. Oh, and a local guy named Billy Dec, who has his hands in some of the best ‘to be seen’ places will be assisting as a consultant. Sure to be the place to be.

Another is the Slurping Turtle, I just love the name. This Chef comes with BIG accolades, Chef Yagihashi. This Japanese restaurant in the River North area will be worth the short cab ride, opening in October and serving your standard fare along with small plate to pick. Hmmm!

BLT American Brasserie, is going into the defunked Ruhlman space which is beautiful. So, no doubt this place will be beautiful and yet another NYC guy bringing his wares to Chicago. I really liked the NY location and I will be going here for sure. BLT will have a raw bar and will serve grilled meats and pizzettas. Sounds odd but this too will be a good one!

Tavernita, opening in my old favorite spot, Martini Park, hails a local chef, Ryan Poli, I like this idea! He will be doing an American Contemporary Restaurant with a European/Latin influence. Hope that makes sense?

Oh and last but not least! Our chef here at the Knickerbocker at NiX, Chef Krista Lotesto. She does great American Contemporary fare. She just changed our Breakfast Menu and it is for sure worth a look and the prices are the same as the neighborhood places. Though our restaurant is closed for dinner, the bar has a great menu from a jumbo crab cake to hummus and everything between. Worth a look!

So, you can check out our restaurant and bar……. Or wait till October for the others to open.

Hope to see you soon and if you need assistance please call Paul, Henry or myself, Sheryl and we will be happy to assist you with your requests.Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel Concierge Cornerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07829437943647276002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6895540424125970062.post-80864327355492028152011-08-25T14:25:00.001-07:002011-08-25T14:25:54.252-07:00End of Summer? Or not! While Labor Day is the official end of summer, to us Chicagoans, the end of summer is when the weather starts to get too cold to sit outside and dine and dance. Though several of the public parks free activities end as well as fireworks, it does not end the weekend festivals and fun. This Labor Day weekend Chicago will host the 33rd annual Jazz Festival in Grant Park, always a hit with locals and tourists alike. It begins Thursday, September 1st through September 4th. There is also a new festival, called North Coast Music Festival, which will have 50 different bands playing September 2nd through 4th. These 2 fests do not put an end to the weekend fun however. All through the month of September you will find things to do.

Last but not least are our baseball teams. Not, that either one has played well. At least for the Cubs, they too will play another 3 weeks of painful baseball if that is what you can call it….. Now on the other side of the City, on the Southside, we have our White Sox. They are in 5th place caused by a wild losing streak a few weeks back, darn! Anyway, it is still a great time catching a game at either park. Mainly because either park host tons of local Chicago food and tons of beer of course.

So, hopefully we’ll see you soon here at the Knickerbocker Hotel and just in case you need assistance or have any questions, you can reach Paul or me, Sheryl at the Concierge Desk. 312-867-7552

There are so many activities around that it would take me several pages just to list them, so I will just mention a few that I love and should be experienced if given the chance.

It is neighborhood festival season and with that comes the opportunity to enjoy some of the diversity this city has to offer not to mention the incredibly talented creative community Chicago. There are so many food, music and arts festivals to mention. From ribs to pierogi, there is something for everyone to eat. Blues, Jazz, and Gospel music are all showcased in their individual festivals. There are several art festivals in different neighborhoods that help local and other artists promote and display their various forms of paintings, sculpture and jewelry.

Millenium and Grant Parks are full of all of the above during the summer. Almost every night, concerts can be heard in the incredibly designed Pritzker Pavillion. Summer dance is very popular with different types of dance being performed, taught and enjoyed on the weekend nights. There are several places to grab a bite to eat and sit and enjoy the kids (and a few adults) playing in the fountain or people watching near the bean. Buckingham fountain erupts every hour on the hour from 9:00am until 10:00pm with a light show accompanying the fountain after dark.

The beach is just a five minutes away by foot. There are several companies that rent everything from bicycles to beach chairs for the day. Day trips to Oak Park and Hyde Park allow visitors to enjoy the wonderful architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Wicker Park has an eclectic mix of Bohemia and Designer Boutiques. Wrigleyville is a mixture of bars, restaurants and shopping not to mention one of the oldest baseball fields still being used (daily tours are available).

This is such a small sample of the wonderful things to do around the city during the next couple of months. The city is always full of activities, festivals, and events. Please see the concierge for tour information, rental information and times and directions to any of the many happenings during summer 2011.

Enjoy!
JeffMillennium Knickerbocker Hotel Concierge Cornerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07829437943647276002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6895540424125970062.post-32340590071563400172011-06-22T13:37:00.001-07:002011-06-22T13:37:49.270-07:00Taste of ChicagoOne of the most popular festivals in the city of Chicago starts this weekend. The Taste of Chicago takes place in Grant Park and features food from local restaurants as well as music and entertainment. Grant Park is located about 1 ½ to 2 miles south of the hotel and is accessible by taxi (approx. $10), bus or by walking (around 30 minutes). The festivities begin at 11:00am and run until around 8:30pm (6:00pm on the last day). The best part is that the festival is free!!! Tickets may be purchased at several booths in order to sample some of the local fare. Having been several times, I find the best time to go is early as the crowds will be slightly less than later in the day.

There are over 50 local food vendors that range from ribs to dessert. Ely’s cheesecake is one of the most popular attractions and believe me, there is a reason. Of course there is the traditional Chicago style pizza and hot dogs, but don’t miss out on the variety of international delights as well like the Star of Siam and Lao Sze Chuan.

Music ranges from country, rock and rock and roll to Celtic. Natalie Cole will be performing as well as the young Greyson Chance. One very popular evening includes highlights from some of the Broadway style shows playing in Chicago or coming soon. There is a Latino music themed evening as well as a Celtic themed night. Two stages will house all of these diverse acts.

I hope you can enjoy one of the most popular events in the city. Remember that it does get crowded and to keep hydrated (water, not beer!).

Enjoy!

JeffMillennium Knickerbocker Hotel Concierge Cornerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07829437943647276002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6895540424125970062.post-85454819126424936822011-05-26T17:40:00.001-07:002011-05-26T17:40:17.955-07:00Let’s Talk FoodI thought since the restaurant show was in town, I would tell you about some of my favorite foods around town. I am not a picky eater and will try almost everything once. There are so many amazing foods in this city and I am continually surprised by the taste and creativity throughout the entire city.

I am going to get the appetizers out first, just like the restaurants. For outstanding nachos, Hub 51 has the best I have had. Try the crab or the chicken, you won’t be disappointed. No one does Calamari like the Capital Grill with a mixture of lightly breaded calamari and banana peppers sautéed in garlic butter. EPIC has an amazing gnocchi appetizer that is indescribable. RL does a buttery lobster bisque perfect for an afternoon lunch. No place like Shaw’s for oysters. I will talk about Macaroni and Cheese in a bit, but Sweetwater has a fried Mac N Cheese appetizer that is incredibly good.

Let’s take a look at some of the side dishes that I have enjoyed. I am a huge Macaroni and Cheese fan, if you couldn’t tell from the last paragraph and there are several places that do it amazingly. Rosebud Steakhouse across the street, Chicago Q, Wilde’s (it is actually a whole meal) are a few of my favorites. David Burke’s deconstructs the baked potato by mixing gnocchi and all of the wonderful toppings. Any of the potato or vegetable choice at Joe’s Stone Crab is great additions to a steak or seafood meal.

I have enjoyed the pleasure of many main courses throughout the area and there are a few that I thoroughly enjoy. It is hard to narrow down the steaks in town, but I love the filet at Benny’s Chop House and the 55 day aged steak at David Burke’s. For prime rib, you can’t beat the Saloon Steakhouse for quality and price. I dream about the crab cakes at Hugo’s Frog Bar and Ria not only prefers a beautiful halibut, but the presentation is art. The brisket at Q is “melt in your mouth” delicious. I absolutely love the tortellini at Carmine’s and any pasta Piccolo Sogno. I am torn between Oysy and Kamehachi for sushi. Lou Malnati’s is my choice for deep dish pizza, but a little place in Andersonville called Antica Pizzeria makes a mean thin crust wood fired pizza.

Surpisingly, I am not going to touch on dessert, because there are just too many to name (but try the espresso ice cream cake covered in home-made peanut brittle at Q)

Again, there is so much food in Chicago, it was hard to narrow down just a few favorites. I love to hear guests give me what they find is their favorite, so stop by and let us help you make a reservation and then come back and tell us of your food escapades.

Enjoy!

JeffMillennium Knickerbocker Hotel Concierge Cornerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07829437943647276002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6895540424125970062.post-79843985240627255032011-05-07T11:03:00.000-07:002011-05-07T11:49:39.507-07:00Chicago: A Walking CityA great way to get to know the wonderful neighborhoods is to jump on a bus or train, end up in one of the unique neighborhoods and start exploring. This was how I was able to acquaint myself with the distinctiveness and diversity of the various areas around Chicagoland.

One neighborhood that I call “Upscale Bohemia” is the WickerPark, Bucktown Area. Everything from specialized boutiques to resale stores line the streets along Milwaukee, Damen and North Avenue. Breakfast at the Bongo Room or a little lounging at the Velvet Lounge. There is plenty of shopping for everyone from resale stores to upscale boutiques. On the first Friday of each month, the Flat Iron Arts Building located right smack dab in the middle of everything opens its artists’ studios to the public for three floors worth of amazing local art.

The Southport Corridor is also a nice way to stroll one of my favorite neighborhoods. You can find all sorts of restaurants, bars and shopping along this one street, just off the Southport Brown Line El stop. The Austrian coffee shop Julius Meinl is a great way to escape to Europe with savory coffee and some of my favorite desserts. You can also try sushi at Sushi Mura or for something unique, Tango Sur is one of the only Argentinean Steakhouses in town. One of the only independent movie theaters, the Music Box is located here with live organ music played on the weekends.

I am always drawn to the Swedish neighborhood of Andersonville because it is one of the up and coming parts of Chicago with a unique amount of upscale resale furniture stores. While wandering Clark street, check out Scout, Four-sided framing and the White Attic. You will not go wrong by eating at Big Jones for Southern food, Antica Pizzeria for oven cooked Sicilian fare or Reza’s for Middle eastern. Hamburger Mary’s is a campy burger place right across the street from Byron’s Hot Dogs if you are craving a good old Chicago style hot dog. Make sure to save room for George’s Ice Cream or any of the wonderful pies or cakes at a Taste of Heaven.

There are so many other wonderful neighborhoods and if you don’t feel like exploring on your own, there are a few companies that provide neighborhood tours not to mention the variety of walking tours available throughout the downtown and loop area.

Enjoy!
JeffMillennium Knickerbocker Hotel Concierge Cornerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07829437943647276002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6895540424125970062.post-70034532902495188952011-04-16T14:44:00.000-07:002011-04-16T14:45:08.734-07:00Passionate ChicagoWhen I moved here years ago, I learned that Chicagoans have a passion about them that is unbeatable. Sports, politics, art, food and theater. Just ask anyone from here and they will tell you their favorite show, team or restaurant and there are many to choose.

Baseball season brings on the cross town rivalry between Sox fans and Cubs fans. I have learned that you are either one or the other, and which ever one you are, you’re a fan until the end. Last year, when the Blackhawks won the Stanley cup, the parade was attended by thousands and thousands of locals who were there to cheer on the champs. We are hoping to do the same for the Bulls this year as well!

When a show like “Wicked” or “Billy Elliott” stays for years, you know a lot of it is due to the support of local patrons. Why should it not? With local theater like Steppenwolf and the Goodman being so well respected in the theater community, it makes sense that Chicago can maintain great theater for a very long time. Let’s not forget about all of the other great and diverse local theaters. I have to mention the incredibly important presence of Second City, the improv theater that boasts many alumni of Saturday Night Live!

Let’s talk about my passion. Food. Chicago can now brag about having the seventh best restaurant in the world, Alinea. If waiting a couple of months to enjoy one of the best meals in the world is not your thing, there are plenty of other choices from traditional steakhouses to every type of ethnic food imaginable. And there are as many opinions about which Chicago style pizza is the best, as there are people. Luckily, between Paul, Sheryl and myself, we have sampled many of the local cuisines and can share some of our favorites.

There isn’t enough space here to talk about Chicago’s love/hate relationship with politics or the incredibly supportive art and music community in the area, so come find out what your passion is in this wonderfully, passionate city.

Enjoy!
JeffMillennium Knickerbocker Hotel Concierge Cornerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07829437943647276002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6895540424125970062.post-76995378922868052072011-04-04T15:43:00.000-07:002011-04-04T15:44:18.631-07:00Shopping the Magnificent MileHow lucky are we to be so close to all of the major shopping in
Chicago? Right around the corner is one of the most notable and well represented shipping areas in the country. Being on the north end of the Mile, we are fortunate to be surrounded with the likes of Chanel, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. Why not take advantage of one of our shopping packages to get your summer wardrobe. A wonderful stay in a beautiful hotel along with a $50 Amex gift card can jump start the warm weather season.

With three large shopping areas on Michigan Avenue, it is easy for men, women, and children to find something they may or may not need. Niketown, the Apple store, Garmin, the Crate and Barrel flag store, Tiffany’s, American Girl Doll Store are all within a few minute walk. There are several floors of shopping at The Shops at 900, Watertower Place and The Shops at Northbridge.

If you are more a boutique shopper, Lincoln Park, the Southport Corridor and Wicker Park are just a cab or train ride away to some unique areas of shopping. Andersonville has some very unique refurbished furniture stores as well as being part of the local Swedish community. Pilsen is an artist’s paradise and Randolph Street has a great weekend antique market.

Once you’ve settled into your room and unpacked, make sure to stop by the concierge desk for a shopping map and coupons to some of the local shopping.

Bye!
JeffMillennium Knickerbocker Hotel Concierge Cornerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07829437943647276002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6895540424125970062.post-32858667350934917072011-03-23T08:51:00.001-07:002011-03-23T08:51:46.675-07:00Spring has arrivedWith the arrival of the first day of spring, many blooming activities will be arriving including the beautiful display of tulips up and down Michigan Avenue. In just a few weeks, a colorful display will line Michigan Avenue with various colors of tulips and daffodils. Besides Michigan Avenue, there are several different blooming places to see flora.

The Lincoln Park Conservatory is a short bus or taxi ride from the hotel and is open daily from 9am – 5pm. There are four different display houses full of ferns, orchids and other various floral displays. Admission is free and adjacent to the Zoo which is free as well.

The Garfield Park Observatory is west of the hotel a few short miles and has a variety of spring floral displays through May. Azaleas and hydrangeas are plentiful with lilies starting to bloom right before Mother’s Day. The Conservatory is also free, open every day and was recently seen in Vince Vaughan’s newest movie, “The Dilemma”.

Further north is the amazingly beautiful Chicago Botanic Gardens. Witch Hazel, aconite and snowdrops are all in bloom and with the milder weather, there is more time to linger outside. Besides the wide assortment of Irish pubs in town there are many activities going on, so pull out your shamrock covered shirts and get ready to drink some green beer.

One of the most popular if not THE most popular events of the day, which is celebrated on Saturday, March 12 this year, is the dyeing of the river. Each year, green dye is placed in the river to start the festivities. At 10:00 am the dyeing begins between Columbus and Wabash. It is quite a sight, but remember, there is no standing on the bridges, so make sure and claim a space along the river walk on either side of the river.

The St. Patrick’s Day parade starts shortly after at noon. The beginning of the parade is at Balbo and Columbus with a viewing stand near Buckingham Fountain. The parade is the largest in Chicago with numerous floats, bands, politicians and bag-pipers.

If you want to stick with the green theme after the dyeing of the river, check out a couple of local restaurants for some good old Irish fare. Corn beef and cabbage can be had at the Mity Nice Grill just three blocks from us. Although it’s known for its German food, the Berghoff will be serving up all sorts of Irish specials as well as music. For something different, try Chen’s up on N. Clark for a twist on eating Irish.

Of course, if you want to join in on the drinking festivities, there are several Irish pubs within walking distance including Dublin’s, Timothy O’Toole’s, The Kerryman, and D4 just to name a few.

Enjoy!
JeffMillennium Knickerbocker Hotel Concierge Cornerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07829437943647276002noreply@blogger.com0
